Improving your health while connecting with the Friendship at Home community has never been easier. You could even say it’s as easy as a walk in the park.
Friendship at Home is proud to announce its new, weekly walking club! Meeting every Friday at 9 a.m. in various Columbus parks, the club is the perfect way for Friendship at Home members to get to know each other while improving their physical fitness.
“Community is really important to us but, because our members live at home, we didn’t have an excuse to get together very often,” said Sharon Fryer, Friendship at Home’s administrative assistant. “We wanted a way for us to get to know each other and create lasting friendships between members.”
Once a month, all Friendship at home members are invited on a scenic walk through senior-friendly parks like Coffman and Kaltenbach parks. During inclement weather the club meets at the Tuttle Crossing Mall.
Walkers also receive walk-a-day journals to record the distance, time and steps they take while walking both with the club and on their own. With tips about setting obtainable exercise goals, the journals help reinvigorate fitness objectives and track progress.
“Everyone who has been coming has had a great time,” said Nicole Rice, Friendship at Home’s member care coordinator. “Some members even want to build themselves up to a full hour of walking, so next Friday, some of us are going to walk 45 minutes instead of a half hour.
Participating members are also treated to snacks at the end of the walk and are eligible to become “milestone members” after walking more than 25 miles with the club. Every 25 miles a member walks will make them eligible for a certificate of recognition.
“It’s been really great to get to know each other and it feels good to know you’re getting some exercise too,” said Nicole.
Walking for as little as 10 minutes a day has been shown to improve both mood and physical fitness, making the walking club the perfect opportunity to stay fit and connected with other Friendship at Home community members.
