How Does a Septic Drain Field Work?

A septic drain field, commonly known as a leach field, is an integral part of your septic system. It consists of a series of pipes that distribute the liquid effluent from the septic tank into the soil. The soil acts as a natural filter, removing harmful bacteria and nutrients from the water. This process is essential for preventing groundwater contamination and maintaining environmental health. Regular maintenance and timely repair of your drain field are vital for its optimal function.

Have used them for several years to maintain and inspect my septic system. However, we were recently having issues and had a wet spot in the yard so called them out to get a quote for the repair. The guy came out and sold my wife the "fix". I asked over the phone three times if he was sure, and what happens if we get down there and they find more, he assured us that we needed jetting and we're good. Well the guy and cane out the next day was not happy, after actually looking (found out the previous guys, didn't run cameras or look at anything) we needed more extensive repairs, however we still needed to pay over $2k for the unnecessary maintenance and now have to pay another $6k plus for the actual fix. Spoke with the manager and said we should not have had this experience, he would speak to owner and get back to us the next day. Three weeks later and nothing. They do not set proper expectations, say whatever they need to charge extra, then just ghost you after years of working with them. Go with another company.

I’m updating my review and rating to 4 stars.

I appreciate that the company reached out the same day I posted my review. I shared my concerns, and to their credit, they listened without getting defensive. They acknowledged the issue, said they’d review it internally, and refunded part of my payment.

While the original experience was inconvenient, their response showed accountability, professionalism, and respect for the relationship. The adjustment made the final cost feel fair, and their follow through changed my perspective.

I value companies that know how to recover when something doesn’t go perfectly. Based on how they handled it, I’d be open to working with them again.

I contacted Tidy Tank during a septic emergency because they were one of the only companies available. Over the phone, I was quoted $189 plus a small additional fee by the dispatcher. Once the technician arrived, the price presented was $880, which was a significant difference from what was discussed.

For context, the septic had been pumped approximately 3 months earlier, the property is barely used, and the actual amount pumped was minimal (see the pics they provided me). After I questioned the pricing, the bill was reduced to $568 within minutes. While I appreciated the adjustment, the large difference between the initial phone quote, the on site quote, and the final invoice raised serious concerns about pricing consistency.

The technician himself was professional and polite. The company also provided photos, documentation, and a digital receipt, which I appreciated. As a woman managing this service call, I paid attention to the tone, the timing, and the way the pricing was presented, and the experience did not feel as transparent as it should have.

I understand emergency service comes at a premium, and I have no issue paying for quality work. My concern is that once they are on site, the pricing felt very predatory. The difference between the phone quote, and the final invoice made the process feel less like transparent emergency service and more like leverage being used at the worst possible moment.

Made an appointment almost 2 weeks ahead. First what caught my eye was the 8 hrs window. Received a Confirmation email and a text message. Perfect. A few days later I received another text to confirm. I did. Day before service another text. Reminder of tomorrow service. Okay. All good. My service day comes and I got 2 more "update " text during the day and about two hours before the window ends after my whole day of waiting i received a phone call that they are having issues and more likely they will not make it and offered to reschedule. It was my first time dealing with a septic so I'm not sure what it takes, but I don't think it's that complicated. Needless to say I said I would get someone else.
I just don't have time to waste. Do not recommend

We had a sewer line back-up recently and called Tidy Tank for assistance. They responded quickly and put together a technical plan to determine where the blockage was. It turned out to be a major issue that took several days to resolve. All along the way, the plumber in charge, TJ, was completely engaged in finding the source with minimum disruption to the home. He had skills, confidence, and drive that were unlike any other. TJ and his co-workers treated our home like their own and were consistently comforting and reassuring. Everyone who owns a property needs competent plumbers whom they can trust and rely on. Tidy Tank is your source!

Great experience with Tidy Tank Septic! Brad handled my septic pumping and was incredibly helpful. Not only did he get the job done smoothly, but he also took the time to explain my whole setup and what to watch for over time. I left the visit knowing a lot more about my system and confident about when I’ll need service next. I’ll absolutely be calling them again. Highly recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you perform septic inspections for real estate transactions?

No. We are septic maintenance company. We advise contacting a Sanitarian licensed by the state for an inspection. Should the Sanitarian find septic pumping or minor repairs necessary; please give us a call.

YES. Some Villages such as North Barrington and Tower Lakes have ordinances requiring regular septic pumping maintenance and have an inspection form they require to be filled out by a licensed professional. Please give us a call, we are licensed to provide this service.

Should your septic system consist of some type of aerobic unit; some counties as well as the manufacturer of the unit require maintenance contracts consisting of 2 visits in one calendar year. Please see our website under Service Contracts for a list of units we service, then give us a call.

Depending on the size of the party; you may want to just have the tank pumped before or after the party or both. Should the party consist of 50, 100 or more; we advise getting porta-potties. Your residential septic system is not designed for this much usage in a short period of time.

An alarm for your septic is for some type of pump. Either your septic system has a lift station or some type of aerobic unit. Most alarms have a “SILENCE” button to shut off the horn. Shutting off the horn does not solve the reason why the alarm went off. You should call your septic professional as soon as possible and tell them what the alarm box says. They can then advise on service.

We vacuum EVERYTHING out of the tank but a few inches. This means both the liquid and SOLIDS. State code states to leave a few inches of liquid in the bottom of the tank. This guarantees the presence of live bacteria. It is counterproductive to have the tank power washed or sanitized after pumping. Our technicians also check the tank and advise of any deterioration, advise if the operating level is proper, check the outlet baffle (if accessible) and ask the homeowner to flush the toilets prior to closing the tank. They can then confirm the flow of water from the house to the tank is proper.

The worst consequence is septic system failure. The solids buildup in the septic tank to the point where solids are allowed to exit the tank and clog the septic field lines. Likewise, substantial solids can accumulate in front of the tank at the mainline and cause the septic to back up into the house. The septic tank acts as a filter to collect the solids. And just like any filter; it needs to be cleaned on a regular basis.

A standard septic tank is just a box in the ground. Septic tanks themselves do not have alarms or any other indicator to tell you when to have pumping. We recommend getting on a regular schedule based on your septic professional’s recommendation, then keep in mind any usage changes in your household.
