How Do Septic Tank Enzymes Work?

Septic tank enzymes are beneficial microorganisms that help break down organic matter in septic tanks. They act as biological catalysts, speeding up the rate of digestion of organic waste and decreasing the amount of solid material left in the tank. Several types of septic tank enzyme treatments are available on the market today, providing a variety of advantages for homeowners with septic systems.

Get in touch with our professional team if you have questions about using a septic tank enzyme treatment in McHenry & Lake County, IL. We are here to provide you with the best septic system care possible

Why Hire a Pro for Septic Tank Enzyme Treatment?

Adding enzymes can feel like a DIY fix, but there’s more to it than meets the eye. First, the right dose matters. Without proper volume and frequency, enzymes sit idle, doing little to no good. Technicians from Tidy Tank Plumbing, Sewer, and Septic know exactly how much to use and when.

Next, enzymes need help reaching the right parts of the system. Our trained crew will open lids, add the product at precise points, and monitor how it mixes with sewage. That ensures the septic tank enzyme bacteria cleaner gets into the sludge layer, breaking it down effectively. Over time, using enzymes on a schedule prevents major backups and keeps your drainage healthier.

Advantages of Enzyme Treatment Services

As a leading source for septic solutions, our expert team is proud to offer a broad range of high-quality solutions, including enzyme treatments. If you’re thinking about using a septic tank enzyme treatment in McHenry & Lake County, IL, learn about a few of the benefits you can expect:

Odor Control:

When organic matter breaks down too slowly in a septic tank, it can produce unpleasant odors. Enzymes introduce beneficial bacteria into the septic tank, which helps break down organic waste materials more quickly and can reduce or eliminate odors associated with slow-draining tanks.

Less Maintenance:

With the help of a septic tank bacteria treatment, homeowners can reduce the need for maintenance and pumping services. Of course, you should still schedule regular maintenance for your septic system to ensure it remains in peak condition.

Improved Drainage:

Enzyme septic tank treatments can help break down organic materials faster, which may allow water to drain from the septic system more efficiently.

What Signs Show Septic Tank Enzyme Treatment Is Working?

Look for these signs:

  • Stronger flow in toilets and drains
  • Less pungent odor near the tank
  • Lower sludge levels at pumping
  • Stabilized performance even during heavy laundry days

We track these over time to show how enzymes keep your system in shape and avoid surprises.

Have used them for several years to maintain and inspect my septic system. However, we were recently having issues and had a wet spot in the yard so called them out to get a quote for the repair. The guy came out and sold my wife the "fix". I asked over the phone three times if he was sure, and what happens if we get down there and they find more, he assured us that we needed jetting and we're good. Well the guy and cane out the next day was not happy, after actually looking (found out the previous guys, didn't run cameras or look at anything) we needed more extensive repairs, however we still needed to pay over $2k for the unnecessary maintenance and now have to pay another $6k plus for the actual fix. Spoke with the manager and said we should not have had this experience, he would speak to owner and get back to us the next day. Three weeks later and nothing. They do not set proper expectations, say whatever they need to charge extra, then just ghost you after years of working with them. Go with another company.

I’m updating my review and rating to 4 stars.

I appreciate that the company reached out the same day I posted my review. I shared my concerns, and to their credit, they listened without getting defensive. They acknowledged the issue, said they’d review it internally, and refunded part of my payment.

While the original experience was inconvenient, their response showed accountability, professionalism, and respect for the relationship. The adjustment made the final cost feel fair, and their follow through changed my perspective.

I value companies that know how to recover when something doesn’t go perfectly. Based on how they handled it, I’d be open to working with them again.

I contacted Tidy Tank during a septic emergency because they were one of the only companies available. Over the phone, I was quoted $189 plus a small additional fee by the dispatcher. Once the technician arrived, the price presented was $880, which was a significant difference from what was discussed.

For context, the septic had been pumped approximately 3 months earlier, the property is barely used, and the actual amount pumped was minimal (see the pics they provided me). After I questioned the pricing, the bill was reduced to $568 within minutes. While I appreciated the adjustment, the large difference between the initial phone quote, the on site quote, and the final invoice raised serious concerns about pricing consistency.

The technician himself was professional and polite. The company also provided photos, documentation, and a digital receipt, which I appreciated. As a woman managing this service call, I paid attention to the tone, the timing, and the way the pricing was presented, and the experience did not feel as transparent as it should have.

I understand emergency service comes at a premium, and I have no issue paying for quality work. My concern is that once they are on site, the pricing felt very predatory. The difference between the phone quote, and the final invoice made the process feel less like transparent emergency service and more like leverage being used at the worst possible moment.

Made an appointment almost 2 weeks ahead. First what caught my eye was the 8 hrs window. Received a Confirmation email and a text message. Perfect. A few days later I received another text to confirm. I did. Day before service another text. Reminder of tomorrow service. Okay. All good. My service day comes and I got 2 more "update " text during the day and about two hours before the window ends after my whole day of waiting i received a phone call that they are having issues and more likely they will not make it and offered to reschedule. It was my first time dealing with a septic so I'm not sure what it takes, but I don't think it's that complicated. Needless to say I said I would get someone else.
I just don't have time to waste. Do not recommend

We had a sewer line back-up recently and called Tidy Tank for assistance. They responded quickly and put together a technical plan to determine where the blockage was. It turned out to be a major issue that took several days to resolve. All along the way, the plumber in charge, TJ, was completely engaged in finding the source with minimum disruption to the home. He had skills, confidence, and drive that were unlike any other. TJ and his co-workers treated our home like their own and were consistently comforting and reassuring. Everyone who owns a property needs competent plumbers whom they can trust and rely on. Tidy Tank is your source!

Great experience with Tidy Tank Septic! Brad handled my septic pumping and was incredibly helpful. Not only did he get the job done smoothly, but he also took the time to explain my whole setup and what to watch for over time. I left the visit knowing a lot more about my system and confident about when I’ll need service next. I’ll absolutely be calling them again. Highly recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions

How does an enzyme for septic tanks work compared to harsh chemicals?

An enzyme for septic tanks works gently. It supports natural bacterial balance without killing microbes or damaging your drain field. Chemicals may dissolve clogs today, but they can harm the bacteria crucial to keeping your system running. Enzymes do the opposite — they boost your system’s digestive power.

Yes. When you use a septic tank enzyme bacteria cleaner regularly, it breaks down grease and solids before they pile up. That keeps pipes flowing and stash volume low. We recommend periodic treatments so your system stays in motion, reducing the chance of backups and slow drains.

No. Septic tank enzyme treatment helps break down waste between pumpings, but you’ll still need your tank pumped on a regular basis. Treatments reduce buildup and help keep the tank functioning longer, but they don’t remove solids completely.

Yes. If your system is struggling to break down waste properly, odors can escape through vents or drains. Enzymes help digest the waste that causes smells, improving airflow and reducing the risk of odors escaping into your home or yard.

Enzymes go after solids like grease, fat, proteins, starches, and even toilet paper. They digest organic matter and help prevent blockages in your pipes, septic drain field, and tank.
